Many of the ideas we see from SEO blogs are great and truly creative, but many of them can take a lot of budget to implement properly. Those that may not require budget in terms of money may actually need budget in terms of people.
If you are trying to work on an SEO campaign that has very small, or perhaps no budget at all, this can be very frustrating. In this article we’ll look at a few SEO tips that you can carry out with no budget.
1. Make sure your META page titles are unique
This is one of the most overlooked factors when it comes to SEO. Many SEOs are too pre-occupied with link building that they forget about the basics. Take some time to go through your META titles and make sure they are unique and relevant. You can quickly spot duplicate META titles using a number of methods. One of which is registering your website with Google Webmaster Tools. Once you’ve done this, they will highlight any pages that contain duplicate META titles.
Another method you can use is to use a crawling tool such as Screaming Frog which can crawl your website. Once it’s done this, you can view META titles for all your pages and find duplicates.

Link building is a very important part of SEO. But it can be quite hard and some of the best ideas can require budget. If you’re just getting going and do not have much budget, why not call in some favours from friends and other people you know who have their own websites?

3. Check your website for errors and broken links
This is another very simple task but one that can really help show that you have a good quality website. If Google is constantly finding broken links and is generally struggling to crawl all of your pages, then it is a signal that your website isn’t very well maintained and therefore may not be good for their users.
Use Google Webmaster Tools to crawl errors with your website and fix them. Look for 404 errors, 500 errors and fix them by redirecting the broken page to a more relevant one, of find the source of the error and fix that.
4. Check who is linking to your broken pages
As mentioned earlier, many link building techniques can take budget to carry out. This technique just takes some of your own time and can be very effective. What you need to do is check who is linking to you and what pages they are. Then you check to make sure that none of these pages are broken. If someone is linking to a broken page, then you’re losing some of the link equity. A good way to check this is to go to a tool like Open Site Explorer, entering your website ten clicking on the Top Pages tab. This shows you the response codes of your most linked to pages, look for the 404 response code. These are the ones that have links but are broken.
5. Check which websites you’re linking out to
This is an often over-looked part of on-site SEO, but when you think about it, you can see why Google would check this and value it highly. If you are linking out to websites that are broken or bad quality, then that is a signal that you haven’t got a high quality website yourself. Otherwise you wouldn’t be linking to low quality websites.
Use a tool like Screaming Frog to crawl your website, then look at the external links. Have a quick check over these links to make sure they’re still working and that they are good quality.
