Marketing News: E-retail 'missing out' on mobile Christmas boom

Online retailers will miss out on Christmas sales opportunities this year, as shoppers remain unconvinced about the strength of e-commerce sites on their mobiles. This is according to a study by content management specialist e-Spirit. e-Spirit's survey, which attracted more than 400 consumer responses, revealed that mobile Christmas shoppers will double in number this year – but these people still make up a tiny minority (seven per cent in 2008 and 14% in 2009). Every single respondent expressed frustration with the mobile shopping experience – with complaints ranging from security (55%), speed (50%) and ease of use (45%). Also, more than two thirds of people (64%) called for mobile-specific shopping apps.

Quick-service restaurant chain Jack in the Box, automaker GM's Chevrolet and musical Jersey Boys are running ads via mobile social network Brightkite. Brightkite recently launched a targeted mobile advertising platform that includes SMS, the mobile Web and in-application ad units after piloting it with more than 20 brands during the summer. Using the system, Jack in the Box, Chevy and Jersey Boys were able to break out of traditional age and gender targeting and target according to a wider range of more relevant criteria.
